Several Months Ago Rick Trice was a guest blogger here, and the first book in the Trent Carter series, Act of Contrition was featured.

Rick kindly gave me an autographed copy of his second book, and in reviews on both Amazon and Good Reads I've been able to honestly laud this story.

If you decide to take the time for a more in-depth historical novel you can't do much better than Land of my Sojourn.

Once again Rick takes us back and forth between two separate time periods. The events of the late nineteeth century in northeastern New Mexico are portrayed through Trent Carter's great-grandfather. Jonathan Carter is fiction of course, but a great many of the people featured in his life are not. Springer and Maxwell and many of the others were pivotal to the rich history of the time and place. Small towns still bear their names and the author takes this opportunity to reveal fascinating true stories and events as he weaves a great plot which will connect generations that span a century and a half. The reader meets a good number of old west rogues and heroes.

Return to the present day in northern New Mexico, and Trent Carter, our retired law enforcement officer. He's healing from psychological and physical injuries with the support of his  new wife Maggie, is trying to get to know his taciturn father better, and starting to contemplate what the future holds. He's on this threshold of a new chapter in his life when he gets a phone call from his friend and former boss Ben Ferguson. Ben values Trent's skills and doesn't let a little thing like retirement get in the way. Would Trent join him out where a long forgotten stagecoach stop was once located?  Someone has been digging in an obscure old grave located on the site, and that someone didn't make it out alive either. What was the fascination here that was worth killing for?

It's a complicated story that will link past and present, a well-kept secret, buried treasure, and the involvement of people in high places, both state-wide and abroad. It held my interest the entire time. The way it all comes together is quite smooth, with many surprises along the way.

  1. Oooh, I love novels that incorporate interesting factual backgrounds and give me both the pleasure of a relaxing fictitious read and a bit of an education along the way.
