One Quick Book Recommendation
Above the Bay of Angels, by Rhys Bowen
Rhys Bowen is an established author and a name quickly recognized among readers of fiction and mysteries. She is a prolific writer. Her credits including The Molly Murphy mysteries, The Constable Evans mysteries, and Her Royal Spyness mysteries.
I have mixed feelings about Bowen's work. Sometimes I really enjoy the stories, other times they disappoint me.
Here is one of Bowen's stand alone books. I gave it a try because it is modestly priced on Amazon in e-book format at $1.99. It was worth the money.
The author became attracted to the idea of a young woman at the turn of the 20th century breaking through into the culinary world in a big way. At the time private homes were exclusively in the hands of women cooks, but not so in prestigious settings.
She chooses a young woman who has come down in the world to find out she has a love and talent for cooking. The very pretty damsel stumbles upon a way to make it into the kitchen of the palace, of all things!
And it takes off from there. With a rich historical background full of the life of Queen Victoria and her court in that lady's last years, a very likeable heroine, a touch of romance and intrigue, what more could you want for a purely enjoyable read?
