Betrayal at Ravensbrook (A Fiona Figg Mystery)
                                 by Kelly Oliver

There is only one Fiona Figg mystery to date. I looked into it because of the price - $1.99 - the description of the story, and the tantalizing cover.

When looking at her author profile, I found out Kelly Oliver is an experienced and prolific writer. Her Jessica James mysteries look quite successful. But I admit she is new to me. If anyone else has read Oliver's work, please share your impressions.

Backdrop of this story; WWI in Britain. The story unfolds as Fiona is confronted with the fact the man she loves and has been married to for four years wants to marry someone else. Fortunately Fiona, as insecure and wanting as she considers herself to be, has a job in which she is being recognized as a woman with intelligence. She finds healing for her pain and an outlet for her justified sense of betrayal in the unlikely opportunity that opens for her in the war office.

My first impression after reading several pages was, "this is ridiculous." But it grew on me! The story is a mass of contradictions. There's Fiona's amazing sense of humor, a rather disjointed plot, and some situations that seem ludicrous. In contrast there are realistic depictions of the horror of war, and very well presented expressions of loss and grief.

Somehow, it all worked. I'll be looking for the next one. See if  it works for you.
